For so many years I avoided Japanese art styles that even resembled anime for fear of being shunned by the community. I grew up during that godawful mob mentality that we have “anime” phases and that we all grow out of them because they are “inferior”.

I only let myself appreciate western cartoon styles and would violently reject people saying my style reminded them of anime.

but, hey seriously, fuck that.

I missed out on some seriously good entertainment because I didn’t want to look like a weeb. But recently I’ve been indulging in some manga, some anime here and there, following Japanese anime artists… I love so many of these styles. they’re beautiful! They’re made with a lot of love and attention.

I ain’t saying I’m about to go and watch a moe anime or a harem anime, nor that the big bouncy titty animes with no depth (klk doesn’t count cos that was amazing) are gunna grab my attention any time soon.

Anime does not equal bad.

It’s versatile and has some amazing art. I would be lying if I didn’t say I wouldn’t be an artist today because of watching anime (princess mononoke to be precise).

I am no longer ashamed of the anime aspects in my style. I am proud of the things that inspired me and made my style what they are today. I am happy with the direction my work is headed and I can thank my influences, anime included, for that.

Don’t let people tell you it’s not okay to enjoy or be influenced by certain things.

Wow! It’s so great to hear that from someone. I’ve been doing a lot of soul searching about my style lately and I totally understand where you’re coming from because I grew up in that age too. I always hated when people said my art looked like anime so I stated trying to change a year or two ago, but it just hasn’t felt natural and my husband said that maybe I should embrace my anime side more. Seeing you saying this really helps me feel like I shouldn’t be afraid to do that. Thank you!

I’m not Japanese or Korean, I just draw artistic and aesthetic passion from their art form! It doesn’t make me a ‘bad’ nerd or smth, I just really love art and I love art unapologetically. It’s a shame the art world is so up its own fucking ass. I went to study at an art university and I was essentially told if i free anything that resembled manga or anime I’d get a terrible score automatically

Omg I shall live by these words. I’ve been feeling down lately because of my inability to draw something more “western”....

It’s not the reason I recommend it though. It’s a very inspiring anime with such encouraging attitudes and points of views it was really worth watching.
