I remember once reading that, “Kids now-a-days just don’t like Sonic. A lot don’t even know about him.” Boy did that make me mad because they couldn’t be more wrong!
I am in college getting my degree in Early Childhood Education so I have to go out to various schools to direct teach and observe. Well on the back on my folder I drew a big picture of Sonic. Do you know how many kids go, “That’s Sonic! My dad and I play his games!” or “I can draw Sonic too!” Because let me tell you, in every classroom there is at least one child who points it out.
One time I entered a kindergarten classroom and a kid noticed it which caused the whole class to start talking all at once how they had either played Sonic, watched the show, or seen the movie (the movie one surprised me honestly). I felt so bad for the teacher trying to calm them all down.
But one occasion topped all others. I was walking down one of the school’s hallways and on the bulletin board outside the 4th grade classroom I had to go in, is this picture of Sonic that read, “Sonic Says that the real superpower is teamwork.” My jaw dropped to say the least. I entered the classroom and on one of the walls is a fan art drawing of Sonic with a red cape. Long story short, the teacher’s daughter (who was in the class) LOVES Sonic. The teacher told me she has had a Sonic themed birthday party for the last several years and then laughed saying she would get out of the Sonic phase one day. I smiled and then told her how I am a huge Sonic fan who collects the comics and plays the video games. The look on her face was priceless.
“Then maybe she won’t get out of that phase.”
I laughed and replied, “Maybe, maybe not. But Sonic is a good thing to like.”
Later, right before I left, the teacher started talking to her daughter, “You know our guest, Miss Sam? Guess what, she’s in college and she likes Sonic too.”
The girls face lit up and she began talking to me about how she has loved Sonic since she was five and that her birthday was coming up and it would be Sonic themed. She also told me she could draw all the characters. It made my day.
So yeah, I don’t know what rock that person crawled out from, but Sonic is still cool and known to a lot of children.
