Daily reminded that the reason the MLP Movie is being distributed by Lionsgate is because when Hasbro was in talks with Sony to distribute it, Sony wanted to scrap the adventure story and turn it into a “fictional characters enter real world and help person find love” story, exactly like the Smurfs movie.

Well since it was asked: it requires almost zero knowledge of the source material, needs almost no writing skill to put together, and therefore, just by using recognized characters, it can turn an easy profit with next to no work.
