TIL that a father in South Carolina almost lost custody of his infant daughter when she was put up for adoption by her mother. 33 states require unmarried fathers to register as ‘responsible fathers’ in order to retain the right to be notified of an adoption or termination of parental rights action.

“His daughter” lmfao men cannot birth children. They do not have innate parental rights. A squirt of sperm doesn’t entitle a man to be involved in a woman’s life through shared parenting. It is a privilege that women allow men to participate in the raising of children. Without a paternity test a man can’t even be sure the child is his. But a woman grows the child inside her body. For nine months it is inside of and a part of her. She risks death to carry and birth it, and it is her child. Forged of her tissue, blood, cartilage, and bone. Patriarchy is the myth that a man and a woman’s contribution to bringing life into the world is equal. Clearly it is not. Mothers and grandmothers are the curators of the continuation of life and they always have been. Useful fathers are the exception, not the rule. In fact, without the incestuous rapes committed by fathers many children would be a lot better off.
