The year is 2050 and the month is November. It is the opening ceremony to the 45th annual Blizzcon. The ceremony takes 8 hours because of how many games Blizzard has expanded to. The crowd grows weary and the cheers are noticeably less enthusiastic with every presentation. Finally, after the World of Warcraft 16: Battle of the Warcrafts, Overwatch is announced. Jeff Kaplan uses a cane to walk to stage as he begins.

“Hey, it’s Jeff from the Overwatch Team…” He is frail. “As you all know, we’ve been working really hard this year. Some people thought it would be ridiculous that we’re trying to keep this game alive after 48 years. But we’d like to let you know that our servers have told us we’ve had a peak of fifty people playing on the North American servers alone.”

A scattered and confused applause.

“Anyway, were excited to bring you what you’ve all been asking for.”

The room darkens and the virtual reality HD Super Deluxe monitor screens around the arena begin to play a cinematic.

Cheers erupt as the animation zooms to Zenyatta, the monk. An ambulance is on site as five people pass out from elated screaming. The short is 7 minutes and 12 seconds and ends as Zenyatta receives Winston’s recall. Zenyatta gazes peacefully into space, leaving an open ending.

“Well, now we have officially given every character a cinematic. For the past fifty years, we have told you through two cinematic a year and a comic every five years how heroes all over the world have answered the call. Now, We are excited to tell you we will proceed with the current lore that is happening after every character has answered the call.” Jeff Kaplan beams and folds his hands.

The crowd roars.

That year, the hero revealed is a petite blonde woman with heavy eyeliner and thin eyebrows. People immediately mistake her for Mercy, a hero that’s long since been retired. Jeff Kaplan explains that this new hero wears a top hat, so therefore not Mercy.

The crowd nods in understanding.
